Vernon “Lefty” Gomez was one of the premier hurlers in the American League during the 1930’s. Armed with an outstanding fastball, he was a main cog in the pitching rotation for the New York Yankees for 14 seasons from 1930 through 1943. During his career he posted a 3.34 ERA, won 20+ games 4 times, won two ERA titles, led the league in strikeouts 3 times, pitched 28 shutouts, an had a lifetime .649 winning pct. with a 189-102 record. He was selected to 7 consecutive All-Star squads, and was the starting pitcher in 5 of the first 6 Midsummer Classics for the American League. He helped the Yankees win 5 World Championships, with a 6-0 record and a 2.86 ERA in Series’ play.
He was elected to Cooperstown via the Veteran’s Committee in 1972.
