When I started the project, I put a giant map of the United States up on the wall of my dining room, and placed a small sticker next to every city, town, and village that I needed to visit on my travels. As I accomplished each goal I removed a sticker from the map, until I reached a point where it became a beautiful tabula rasa; all the graves photographed. I intended to replace all the stickers to celebrate and remember each place I visited, but this never happened. Around the same time I photographed the final Hall of Famer, I had moved, and there was no place on the new apartment walls for a 5′ x 3′ map of the US.
In celebration of the publication of “The Hall Ball,” I have decided to do that original idea one better. I have created a Google Map for you to enjoy. Explore the entire United States (and Cuba) and take a peek at the places I visited on my travels. Each entry includes the photograph of The Hall Ball, the birth and death dates of the player, and what date the photo was taken for the project. The parenthetical numbers next to each name indicate where that Hall of Famer fell, chronologically, in my journey.
At the moment The Map only includes the graves and symbolic locations for the deceased players. I’ll be adding even more content, soon. Expect to see the living players in my next update. I’ll also be including a few easter eggs, such as locations that were part of the story, even if they weren’t an ultimate destination. Some of them you’ll recognize from the book. Some are deep cuts, stories that have not yet been told.
Be sure to click on the thumbnail image provided for each location. That will display the full-sized Hall Ball photo. For a list of Hall of Famers, click on the icon in the top left corner of The Map.
I hope you enjoy this whole new way to experience the journey.
